How to care for Silver/Gray Hair

Are you curious about coloring your hair silver or have you already taken the leap and need more information on how to keep your tresses salon fresh?

A word to the wise: choosing this hair color isn’t for the lazy. It is high maintenance and involves a lot of hair products that add up. I am not the most diligent person when it comes to hair care, however making a conscious effort to maintain my locks has it benefits.

I must admit, when I decided to go with a bold new hair color, I did not fully prepare myself for what’s to come. There wasn’t enough thought or research that went into it and well it turned out to be an interesting lesson. I have been contemplating about coloring my hair gray before but what stopped me was the fact that a.) I wasn’t sure how it will be received at work, b.) I was unsure if it will go well with my complexion and c.) I didn’t know where to start.

When O&M reached out for a hair makeover, I saw it as a sign. Hair whisperer, Brianna Davis at O&M NYC took on the challenge without flinching and helped eliminate the guessing work out of my after-care regimen. Since I had grown in roots an old single process from before, the lifting process was lengthy and quite meticulous. It involved lifting my previous hair color for a balanced hue then afterward, toned with a dark blue-gray color. I had to do two sessions with Brianna until we got to the color that we were satisfied with. The second process was a double process hair painting (phew, that was a mouthful!) which is a gentle developer that lifts hair color without damaging it. Finally, a single process was done to achieve that icy hair tone.

How to Maintain Silver Hair

1. Wash your hair only 2-3 times/week

Water alone can strip hair color if washed on a regular basis.

2. Go Sulfate Free

Use shampoos that are sulfate free. Watch out for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) on the label. Sulfates strip your scalp and hair of protective oil. I use O&M Conquer Blonde Silver Shampoo. According to Brianna, use Conquer Blonde only 1-2 times a week depending on how cool you want your hair to stay. To achieve an icy silver hair, apply this on damp or dry hair for 5-15 minutes then wash off. Do not use every day as it dries out the hair. Clairol shimmer lights (blonde and silver) is also highly recommended among hair threads across the web, though I have been warned that this product smells pungent.

3. Hair Masks

Hair Masks are your best hair friends. They restore moisture lost in your hair. Slather some hair mask before washing your hair. Some use coconut oil and let it sit for 5 minutes.

4. Use Heat Protectants

If you apply heat on your hair, use a heat protectant to avoid further damage.

5. Leave-in Conditioners

Incorporate hydrating products into your hair regimen. Leave-in treatments help retain moisture - your hair will love you for it!

6. Let your Hair Breathe

Wait at least six to eight weeks until your next treatment. It is common and recommended to come into the salon to get your color touched up.
